What is a C.V.?

The initials C.V. stand for the Latin ‘Curriculum Vitae’ meaning ‘course of life’.   A C.V. is a short factual account about yourself including your skills and abilities, work experience and qualifications.   Ideally it should not be any longer than two A4 sides.

What is a C.V. for?

Your C.V. is your own personal marketing document with the aim to get you an interview and therefore have an influence on what will be discussed at interview.

C.V. information should:
  • be clear and concise, allowing the reader to find the information that they require without too much effort
  • create a good first impression of you
  • be tailored to individual job applications highlighting the skills required for the particular vacancy
  • highlight your transferable/specific/core/soft skills, so be positive, do not give any negatives and do not undersell yourself

What to include:

Personal Details - name, address, telephone numbers and email address

Personal Profile - a short statement at the beginning of the C.V. highlighting your selling points

Skills and Qualities – relevant to the position you are applying for

Employment History - in chronological order starting with the most recent position first

Education and Training History – again in chronological order

Achievements – what achievements you have had either work or personal.  This is important especially if you are a school/college leaver and have had little or no work experience

Interests – what you enjoy doing in your spare time

References – state that ‘References are available on request’
