Covering Letters
What is a covering letter?
A covering letter should always accompany a CV whether it is asked for by an employer or not, as it’s purpose is to introduce you to the employer and then tie together the facts on your CV with the requirements for the job.
A typical covering letter begins by stating which post you are applying for (including reference number if quoted) and where you saw the advert. It then goes on to link your interests with those of the company and to highlight the knowledge, experiences and skills, which would be of most use to them and the position you are applying for. It concludes in the expectation of a positive response by the employer to convey enthusiasm and confidence.

Styles of letters
There are three main styles of letters used in business, when applying for work:
- The Application Letter - If you see an advertised vacancy and you wish to apply for it, usually you are asked to apply in writing and also send a copy of your CV
- The Speculative Letter - You may want to write to an employer and ask them if they have any vacancies, now or in the near future, which they could consider you for
- The Enquiry Letter - When a vacancy is advertised, sometimes employers ask you to write for an application pack. This is a very short and simple letter
