Application Forms
Application forms are used to screen applicants for interview and employers will be looking for details and information that match the vacancy requirements. A completed form that is positive, well thought out and clear will greatly help your chances of getting an interview.
Before you start
- Read the form from start to finish and think about how you will answer all the questions before you put pen to paper and take note of any instructions e.g. complete in block capitals and with black ink
- Always follow the instructions exactly
- Take a photocopy of the form or use blank paper, and practice on this first
- Use your C.V. and the Job Description/Person Specification to help you answer the questions
- Make sure you include any relevant experience and give examples where required
- Answer all questions, which apply to you, keeping your answers short and to the point and any questions or sections that are not relevant to you –– always write in N/A, none, no etc
- If you need more space use a separate sheet of paper and attach it to the form
- If you are asked for a reference think carefully about your choice and get their permission first
- Make sure your spelling and grammar are correct
- Keep a copy of the job advert and the completed application form for your own records – it will help you prepare for an interview or to complete other forms
- Use a large envelope, never be tempted to cram the form into a small one
- Make sure that the form reaches the employer before the closing date
