National Qualifications (NQ) are the qualification system used by all high schools, colleges and universities. First introduced in Scottish high schools and colleges in 1999, National Qualifications (NQ) are now standard across the Scottish education system. National Qualifications are available at up to five levels:
![]() National Qualifications are a valuable pathway to higher-level qualifications such as Higher National Certificates and Diplomas (HNCs and HNDs), as well as degrees. They give employers and educational establishments excellent evidence of a student's ability to study at advanced level and are accepted by all Higher Education Institutions. On successfully completing your NQ at Intermediate 2 or Higher you have the opportunity to progress on to a course at HNC or HND level or go on to university. You can also leave the education system for a time to seek employment and re-enter to study for higher qualifications at your discretion. |
