Information literacy
Information Literacy is knowing when and why
you need information, where to find it, and how to evaluate, use and communicate it in an ethical manner.

What can Information Literacy do for you?
Information Literacy consists of a series of transferable skills
enabling you as an individual to find, retrieve, assess, manage and
apply information in either your learning, working or social
environments.
Information Literacy skills save time
Using and being familiar
with advanced features of search engines and planning the search you
are going to do will help you find more relevant information.
Information Literacy skills contribute to employability
Being
able to handle information confidently is a key selling point on your
CV. See some examples below. In addition they will enable you to work
effectively and quickly which may be relevant certain workplaces.
- I am able to locate, extract and analyse data from a variety sources.
- I am able to analyse problems and use innovation, logical and lateral thinking in their solution.
- I can communicate effectively using visual, graphic, written and verbal means.
- I have excellent IT and data handling skills.
- I can manage my own time and work to deadlines.
Information Literacy skills are good preparation for further study
Developing
your range of Information Literacy skills early in your academic career
will enable you to progress to higher level courses where project work
and/or dissertations are necessary.
Information Literacy skills improve the quality of academic work

Backing
up an argument in academic work is an essential skill and achieved by
being able to find, retrieve, evaluate and communicate high quality and
relevant information. The ability to correctly reference acts as
signposts to those who read your academic work.
Information Literacy skills are useful in daily life
Even if
you do not go onto higher levels of courses, Information literacy
skills are still useful when searching for information in your daily
life.
