Full-time Student Support Funding - A Simplified Guide
The financial support system available for full-time students seems very complex at first sight.
There’s a range of bursaries, grants and allowances available to help fund your College studies
- but how do you find out what’s right for you?
As a full-time student, you will fall into one of the three following categories:
-
Full-Time Further Education applicants (under 19 years of age on date course starts)
NQ, NC and City & Guilds courses
You are eligible to apply for an Education Maintenance Award (EMA).
All EMAs are means tested, so the amount you are entitled to depends
upon your household income. All EMAs for study at Carnegie are
administered by the College. Bursary/EMA application forms are sent out
to all students who have accepted an offer of a place at the College.
-
Full-time Further Education applicants (19 years or over on date course starts)
NQ, NC and City & Guilds courses
You should apply to the College for a bursary. Bursary/EMA application
forms are sent out to all students who have accepted an offer of a place
at the College. Bursary funds are means tested to ensure that those
most in need of financial assistance receive it, on a first come first
served basis. Therefore, we recommend you apply for a bursary as soon as
you receive an offer of a place at Carnegie College, to have the best
opportunity to secure funding.
-
Full-time Higher Education applicants (of any age)
HNC, HND, Degree, and Professional Qualifications
You are eligible to apply to SAAS (Student Awards Agency for Scotland)
for a Student Loan to help with your living costs while you are
studying. Additional support funds may also be available to you from
the College, but only if you have taken the maximum student loan
available to you. For more information, visit www.saas.gov.uk or call
SAAS on 0300 555 0505.
In every case, it is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure they
have secured the appropriate funding prior to starting their course. To
ensure that you have access to all the funding support available, we
recommend that you attend one of our funding workshops at the College
throughout the summer (May – August). Call Customer Services on 0844 248 0115 or email

Additional Support - Travel, Childcare and Discretionary Funds
There is additional financial support available to assist students with
housing, childcare and travel costs. The College also has a
Discretionary Fund to help students with other expenses that are causing
hardship. These funds are administered within the College, (with the
exception of travel for Higher Education students – you should apply to
SAAS). Whilst there is no guarantee that every application will be
successful, students are encouraged to enquire about any available
assistance.
