Fire and Rescue Officers Enrol at Carnegie College
A new course starting this month at Carnegie College has attracted a full complement of students, the majority of whom are serving officers with the Fire and Rescue Services within central and southern Scotland. The new course, offered by the College’s Andrew Carnegie Business School, Diploma in Public Service Leadership is accredited by the cmi (Chartered Management Institute).
It is aimed at developing professional managers with the public sector and encouraging them to work more collaboratively whilst broadening individual leadership capabilities. The 16 fire officers who are joining the course represent Fire and Rescue Services in Fife, Central Region and Lothian and Borders, the other student is employed by Fife Constabulary.

On Tuesday 5 February, the students will be welcomed to Carnegie College by staff and cmi representatives Ian Andrew (Regional Manager) and Julie Peters (UK Membership Manager), and Fire and Rescue Service Learning Development Managers, David Young (Lothian and Borders), Mike Doherty (Fife) and David McGown (Central Scotland).

Speaking about the new Diploma, Andrew Carnegie Business School lecturer Ron Broatch said ‘We are extremely pleased that the value of this new qualification has been recognised by the Fire and Rescue Services and other public sector employers. To have a full class at the launch of the Diploma is very encouraging. The course has been designed by the public sector for the public sector and will help these organisations address the need for suitably qualified and experienced managers. Employers will benefit from better trained managers, whose work on qualifications can add significant value for the organisation through work-based assignments. Management qualifications can impact greatly on performance and productivity within an organisation.’

The majority of the study is undertaken on a part-time distance learning basis supported by a total of eight one day workshops which are held at locally convenient sites for the participants. The course gives candidates cmi membership and successful completion can lead to the Executive Diploma in Management and then to the MBA. Study of both can be undertaken at Carnegie College.
