Carnegie College's Construction Challenge
Carnegie College recently invited young pupils from local High Schools to try their hand at Construction trade skills. As part of the Government’s ‘Determined to Succeed’ initiative this Enterprise Challenge Day is the first event in a series to be held during 2008. Other events will include Engineering, Hospitality and Computing challenges all designed to give school pupils a chance to experience some of the many future training, career and employment opportunities available to them.
On Monday 28 January Carnegie College’s School of Built Environment lecturers supervised teams of pupils from six schools as they competed against each other whilst undertaking activities including Brickwork, Plumbing, Scaffolding, Roofing, Joinery and a ‘special’ slate cutting challenge, where pupils made their own drink coasters to take home.

Alan Huey, Head of Carnegie College’s School of Built Environment said ‘We are very pleased to welcome the High School pupils to our Cowdenbeath campus. There is nothing like a ‘hands on’ experience for anyone considering career options. The modern Construction Industry offers many exciting opportunities for school leavers. It is a dynamic and expanding sector that nationally requires many new recruits to support its growth. Carnegie offers pre-apprentice courses and Modern Apprenticeship training through to Higher National courses. This schools event has proved a great success in the past and I am sure all those taking part will have fun whilst learning more about Construction trades.’

The event took place at Carnegie’s Cowdenbeath campus. The winning team won a pass for each member to visit a local leisure complex receiving a meal and two games of bowling. The six teams taking part were from Kinross High School, Beath High School, Inverkeithing High School and from Dunfermline – St Columba’s High School, Queen Anne High School and Dunfermline High School.
