| Carnegie College Graduation Ceremony |
|
Wednesday 17th September will see a record number of Higher Education students graduate at the first such ceremony as Carnegie College. The event will be held in the grand surroundings of Dunfermline Abbey.
Over 160 of the 360 eligible ‘Employment Ready’ graduates will take part in the ceremony and formally receive their certificates in a wide range of Higher Education Subjects at HNC/D, Degree and professional qualifications levels. Not all of those graduating will be finishing up their studies at Carnegie, some will have already signed up to build again on their qualifications next year. By continuing to work closely with industry and developing courses suited to business needs the college has excelled in terms of student applications and enrolments this year. With a record 28% increase in applications this year, Carnegie College is setting the pace as a key community hub, actively pursuing its mission of enabling and enthusing learners. Speaking about the ceremony College Principal Professor Bill McIntosh said, “A graduation ceremony is a very special occasion – not least for the students but also for the College Staff and friends who help the students achieve their qualifications. I am personally very proud of the Carnegie College graduates and always enjoy celebrating their achievements. As we develop our partnership with Napier University I am pleased to see so many of our graduates achieving degrees and I am excited to see how we can work together to create futures for more individuals and subsequently the businesses they work for.” Napier University and Carnegie College are working in partnership to enable access to learning up to degree level, all without leaving Fife. This year the students have received outstanding results, with 16 out of 20 Distinctions for the BSc Network Computing class, with a 100% pass rate for those studying through evening classes. There was also a remarkable 100% pass for this year’s BSc Multimedia Technology class, 33% of the students passing with Distinction. Amongst the graduates receiving their certificates at the Abbey will be Kate Sommervail who recently received the Carnegie College Student of the Year award. Having worked her way through an NQ, an HNC and an HND, Kate went on to achieve a BSc in Multimedia Technology by studying part-time. Kate returned to college after having her children so that she could enhance her career prospects. Another successful student is Helen Rugg who was runner up in the Learner of the Year Award. Helen attended a community learning base in Parkgate, Rosyth and as she was keen to find employment she began her learning journey by taking an ECDL course (European Computer Driving Licence) which provided her with the skills and confidence she needed. Now Helen has gone on to achieve even more, and this graduates with an HNC Social Care with aspirations to pursue a degree in Social Science. Competition in the labour market means many students wish to build on their qualifications to secure a promotion in the workplace and Stephen Stooke is just one of those who have decided to pursue their degree here in Dunfermline at Carnegie College. Having worked as a Customer Adviser for Sky, Stephen chose to return to college to build on his HNC in Computing to enable him to apply for jobs in network computing. Now graduating with the BSc Network Computing degree awarded in connection with Napier University, Stephen has even managed to add to his qualifications by taking evening classes to become Microsoft Certified.
