This year, Carnegie College sponsored the Group Award, which was presented by Rose Duncan, assistant head of School of Access and Communities, on behalf of the college.

The winner of the Group Award was Cowdenbeath Gingerbread, formed in 2007. The group gained skills through workshops centered around recycling and arts and crafts projects for their children. They then decided they wanted to do something for the community, so set about making items for a local children’s nursery.

The group has continued to work together, offering help and support to each other, picking up new skills and knowledge along the way.

Next Step’s student Brian Donaldson was announced as IT Learner of the Year, initially attending Next Steps in Kirkcaldy as an Adult Literacies learner.

Brian’s aim has always been to achieve ECDL, and Next Steps/Carnegie College has been able to provide the flexibility for his attendance, to tie in with personal and workplace demands. Supported by IT Tutor Tracy Dodds, he has achieved Access 3, Intermediate 1 and Intermediate 2 to date, and is currently working towards a Citizenship Certificate.

Brian will continue to be supported in completing his ECDL through having a mentor who meets with him every week at Next Steps.

Four students from Valleyfield Learning Centre were nominated, Pete Rennie, Lesley Ann Club, Charlotte Parry and Mary Hunter, with Pete, Mary and LesleyAnn being given Special Mentions along with tutor Karen Roxburgh.
