Carnegie Jewellery Students Design for Valentines Day

On Thursday 12 February, Carnegie College’s Jewellery students held a sale of work in the College’s Skibo Refectory. This gave college students, staff and members of the public the opportunity to buy unique items which could prove very useful this weekend – Valentine’s Day, when a special gift may be called for. Some of the pieces on sale had a heart shaped theme.

Caroline Finlay, lecturer, speaking about the event said ‘The sale gave all the jewellery students the opportunity to exhibit their work. The organisation and marketing of an enterprise activity forms part of their course work. Many of the students are looking to become self-employed upon completion of their courses and sales activities such as this are a great way for them to learn how to interact with the public and ‘sell’ their work. They can also judge what makes a design or piece of work popular with the public. In the past students have sold necklaces, rings, bracelets, cuff-links and ear-rings, and taken orders for future pieces. I am sure the event will prove just as successful for the full and part-time students participating’.

Also as part of their course, during February the students will be visiting the workshops of well-known Scottish silversmiths and jewellery designers Malcolm Appleby and Dot Sim. This will give them the opportunity to see commercial workshops in operation and receive first hand advice as to how to succeed in a highly competitive industry.
