Carnegie Design Students
As Carnegie College’s creative students celebrate another successful annual exhibition of their work over the past year, one student who was delighted to show off her design talents was nineteen year old Sophie Black from Dunfermline.

At the age of 15 Sophie enrolled on her first course, Introduction to Creative Technology. She then went on to complete the NQ course, where she came to the attention of tutor Caron Harvey-Ogilvie, who saw Sophie’s potential for graphic design and advised her to apply for the NQ in Graphic Design and New Media.

Caron said “I recognised a talent for graphic design in Sophie very early on. She has always demonstrated a natural flair for design in all her projects as well as innovative approaches and passion, which is so important in such a competitive field. She has always shown drive, determination and enthusiasm from the first moment she began her studies on the NQ Graphic Design and New Media and throughout HNC and HND Visual Communication.

Sophie is taking advantage of the direct progression route we have with Edinburgh Napier and entering the 3rd year of the BDes(hons) in Design and Digital Arts to continue her career path in design.” Sophie picks up the story, “I knew that this was the area I wanted to specialise in and follow as a career. I then applied for the HNC in Visual Communications, where I achieved an ‘A’, which pushed me on to go for another ‘A’ in the second year HND course. Like most of my classmates, I’m going on to Edinburgh Napier university after the summer and I’m really excited about that. Since I left school I have gone through massive changes, from school to college and now to university and I’ve met some brilliant people here at Carnegie and made some great friends. I’d like to work in web design and advertising, although my dream is to go to Australia and set up my own company. I’ve heard you can wear flip-flops there all the time.”

Assistant Head of School of Computing and Creative Arts, Denise Breckenridge, concluded, “The range of skills displayed by all creative students is a constant source of wonder to me. The staff and I are very proud of the fabulous work they produce, every year the standard is raised and each year that standard is reached.”
